the very core of me is island. i can neither explain or understand it. the life rhythms, the cadence of the language, the inescapable heat and strange tropical fruits. the stray dogs and bicycles. papaya trees lining the rutted streets, open-air markets, and colourful public transport blaring te vaka -- for every pidgin conversation and ocean sunset... here i am home.

currently located: amidst 'the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean' (according to mr.twain) currently reading: the sex lives of cannibals by j. maarten troost... a candid, colourful travelogue/community development memoir - highly reccommended; traveling next: honolulu, for the holidays; currently missing: actually? i'm missing houghton. snow and all; newest hobby memorizing the latin names of hawaii's birds; recent indulgence: in promptu candle-lit fresh ahi sashimi dinner with italian wine and interesting conversation; jobs most recently applied for: secondary teacher in fiji's yasawas islands, social worker st. croix womens' clinic, turtle conservation guru with volcanoes national park; item of the week: the reclining chair on the makai porch... ooh buddy, that chair plus sunshine and a good book = sheer bliss
